僕は文系の世界史受験だったので、中国近代史の主要人物はほとんど覚えている清朝の康熙帝や乾隆帝、末期の光緒帝、西太后や康有為、袁世凱、李鴻章などなど。しかし、彼らがこんなにも身近で血肉を持って感じられるとは！。これぞ小説の力だ。
とりわけ、まさに帝王の風格と織田信長のような型破りな中国最大版図を実現した乾隆帝や彼の右腕だったカスチリョーネというヴェネツィア出身の宣教師、傾国の毒婦として歴史に悪名高い西太后の新解釈、天才宰相として北洋軍建軍と近代国家のシステムの導入を図った李鴻章など、その生き生きとし、苦難の中でも凛として誇りを持つ人物の大きさの描写には感動する。個人的には、香港割譲の交渉をする天才的外交官李鴻章の手腕には、腰が抜けるほど感動した。

ちなみにルビが中国語でふってあることも、非常に興味深い。リコウショウではなくリイホンチャンだし、セイタイゴウではなくシータイホウなのだ。日本は、音読みで中国名を読む癖があるが、もしかしたらそれって失礼に当たる可能性があるのでは、と感じた。

中国の清時代、国のために運命を翻弄されながらも必死に生きた人々がいた。日本の幕末のような壮絶な人々の人生がこの中国にもありました。昴の星の元に生まれた春児は、この国のまさに希望の星でした。
「私はあなたたちを愛しています。だからあなたたちも僕のことを愛してください」
一番印象に残った言葉です。

全４巻で描かれる清朝末期の中国。後半に入り、日清戦争の勝利で西洋列強の仲間入り（又は競争相手）を果たした日本も加わっての中国が切り刻まれてゆく様子が描き出される。租界地を拡大し、中国の中に自国の領土を拡大してゆく姿は、他国蹂躙以外の何物でもない。そういう中で中国を守り抜こうとする人達の活躍が胸打つ。中でもイギリスと香港租借を巡って李将軍が登場するシーンは名場面。香港が何年か前に中国に返還されたが、その交渉が描き出される。９９年（９９とは永遠の意味と説明し）という今から見れば遥か彼方だが９９年後の人から見ればそれ程昔ではない期間を貸し出すという５０００年の歴史を持つ人達の知恵を振り絞った防衛が行われた。主人公達も階位が上がり、歴史的人物の間に入って活躍をし始める。著者の作品に共通するリズミカルな文章であっという間に読み進められるのが良い。
