第一勧銀、日本興銀、富士銀行の３つの銀行による「みずほ」統合の、その端緒から足掛け数年に渡る経緯を描いた「小説」。この場合、小説というのが曲者。小説とすることで適度に著者の創作が入っていますよ、ということなのだろうが、現経営陣を美化した提灯記事的な印象しか残らない。
最初から最後まで著者の視点は、経営層、それも三行間の軋轢をくぐりぬけた現経営陣しか見ていない。途中で外れていく人物に対しては「恐怖政治」「陰のCEO」または「フセイン」などと揶揄する一方で、現経営陣については、「決断力がある」「意思が揺るがない」「信念をもった」等、歯が浮くような描写が頻発する。また統合の作業を行った従業員や取引先の視点といった複眼的な視点に欠け、社長が国会に召還されるまでになった「大システム障害」という点については、公式発表をそのまま転記しているだけ・・。システム障害の原因分析といった掘り下げはない。ここから何を読み取り、何を得ればよいのだろうか。
純粋に「経済小説」として見ても、山もなくだらだらと続く印象。また、特定の言い回しや表現が何度も出てくる文章のつたなさは相変わらず。

内容は新聞記事と銀行の記者会見を時系列でつなぎ合わせただけで、合併にいたるまでの経緯や各行の状況、合併の必然性がぜんぜん伝わってきません。なぜこんな作品を高杉良ともあろう人が出版したのかわかりません。もしかしたらご本人は書いていないかもしれませんね。
