死刑囚の冤罪を晴らすため、刑務官の南郷と前科を持つ三上が調査に乗り出す。

物語が進み、徐々に真実が明らかになる中で、登場人物のほとんどが真犯人に思えてくるほど、多くの伏線が張ってある。物語の後半から一気にストーリーが進み、真犯人は非常に意外な人物であった。
作中、死刑制度の詳しい解説・死刑執行の方法が書かれており、読み手の知的好奇心を満足させてくれる。死刑執行の描写は非常に生々しく、サスペンスとしてもお勧め。罪を犯した人間を国によって殺す「死刑制度」の必要性についてや、国が発出する命令書のため現場で実際に死刑を執行せねばならない刑務官の苦悩など、普段あまり意識していなかった死刑について深く考えさせられた。

　たいへん面白かったです。
　死刑囚が思い出した「記憶の断片」「階段の記憶」を無罪の証拠とするために、弁護士が取り次いだ篤志家の意向を受けて刑務官の南郷と仮釈放中の青年純一が調査をはじめます。
　すると、その事件にはやはり、別の犯人がいる可能性がでてきて…。
　死刑囚が判決を受けるにいたった事件のほか、刑務官南郷の今までの職務内容や純一の起こした事件など、たくさんの事柄が語られていてとても興味深い筋立てになっています。
　そのうえ、それらが後に伏線だったことに気がつかされ、何度も驚かされます。
　とても重いテーマを扱っているのに文が巧みでスラスラと先に読んでいけます。
　登場人物が魅力的で、感情移入がしやすくその心理描写が丁寧に描かれているうえ、推理小説としての謎解きも申し分なく描かれています。
　一気に読めて、とても読み応えのある小説。
　私が今年読んだ小説のなかで一番に面白かった本です。

私の大好きな宮部さんが絶賛してるというオビに惹かれて購入。正直、最初の数十ページは、とくになんとも思わず、内心「失敗したかな」って思いました。ところが読み進めていくうちにハラハラと涙が出てきて止まらず、読み進めていくと、、、ページをめくった次の瞬間、目に入った言葉に「絶句」したのはこの本がはじめてです。思わず、「なんで」って独り言言ってました。読後感はやるせなさが残りますが、最近のイチオシとなりました。
