短編集として、最高に好きな作品です。
大学生の頃はガールフレンドができると必ず渡してました。（バカですね）
ちなみに後輩は村上春樹を女の子に渡してました・・・。
余談ですが、こういうのって、大体共感してもらえないんです、大概。
女性は結構、こういうのスルー。
若い男は好きな娘に自分のお気に入りを軽く無視されて、大人になっていきます。
ほんとは「こんな素敵な本（音楽）を勧めてくれる○○君って素敵！」と言われることを期待しているのに・・・。
人生は期待はずれの繰り返しだということを学ぶんですね。
人生は苦いと・・・。

さて本作ですが、テーマはまさに「人生の苦さ」。
登場するのは、
若くして人生のピークを迎えた元フットボール選手、
30歳前で家族の生活を支え続ける脚本家、
妻と向かうパーティーに遅れないために良心を犠牲にしたエグゼクティブなど。

ショーと同時代の作家には、ヘミングウェーがいます。
彼の描く男はマッチョで、タフガイ。
それに対してショーの描く男は、精一杯人生を生きて行くのだけど、決して強くはない。
日常に絡めとられていく姿に共感します。

舞台は多くがニューヨーク。１９３０年代。
お洒落な会話、風俗が描かれています。
都市生活の生き生きした描写（酒場とかNYを歩くデートシーンとか）は普遍的に格好いいのではと思います。

一番好きな作品は「ストロベリーアイスクリームソーダ」。少年の成長をVIVIDに描いた傑作です。

日常の中のさりげないシーンを書き出してきれいにまとめあげた短編集。こういうきれいで気の利いた会話で満たされた短編って最近すくないですね。
ちょっと懲りすぎていたりして。
男と女の洒落た会話だけじゃなく、いろんな気の利いた、まっすぐな会話とかやりきれなさとかで満ちていて素敵です。

ぼくは、この本を10年ほど前に読みました。
当時つきあってた女の子に、これ、お薦め！とはりきって
渡しましたが、全く共感されなかったのを記憶してます。
まあ、そうなのかもしれません。　

いせむしさんと同じだなと思って、つい書き込みしたくなりました。

今は6月ですが、この本の季節も今頃だったでしょうか？
この季節に街を歩く女の人を見てると、この本を思い出します。
やはり、ときめいてきますね。

お薦めの本です。
