「最悪」と並ぶ、作者の代表作。

2002年度版　このミスで模倣犯に続く2位。
文春 2001　傑作ミステリーベスト10で6位。

本作品には三人の主要人物が登場する。
妻を交通事故でなくしたトラウマから立ち直れないでいる警部補・九野
家族4人で平凡に暮らす主婦・恭子
将来に目標もなく、ワルにもなりきれない高校生・祐輔

一見関係ない彼らの人生が、小都市で起こった放火事件をきっかけに、交錯していくという、クライムノベル。
些細な事件を、一級のサスペンスに仕上げ、一気に読ませる筆力はすばらしいの一語に尽きる。
是非おすすめの一冊である。

余談であるが、この作品以降、作者の作品がミステリーファンにとっては物足りないものとなっている。もう一度、この作品で得た驚きを味わいたい。

話自体は、幾人かの人間に降りかかる出来事が絡み合い読み手を飽きさせることがありません。実際私も、読み始めたら夜中を過ぎてもやめられないほどでした。そういった意味では素晴らしい小説なのかもしれませんが、読後感が本当に悪いです。私は主人公のひとりと同じ主婦なので特にそう感じるのかもしれませんが、読み終わった後に残るのは虚しさばかりです。結末も中盤盛り上がったわりには適当に決着をつけたような感じで、読後感も含めて評価をするなら星2つだと思います。ただ、結末までの話の運びは息つくひまもないほどの面白さなので、星3つで。

下巻は結末が知りたくてイッキに読んでしまいました。人にはどんなにがんばってもうまく行かない時があります。その落ちていく様子がおもしろく描かれていました。また、それに反した行動をしだすのも成る程とうなづけました。事件そのものよりも、主婦恭子、刑事九野の内に秘められた心理がよくあらわれていて納得の本です。
