　この本では放火になっていますが、実はモデルになった事件が存在します。それは1998年の「ザイエンス新潟支店毒物混入事件」。　動機もまるっきりこの本と同じですので、作者はこの事件にインスパイアされてこの作品をものにしたと思われます。　しかし、犯人の妻の疑心暗鬼と直感から追い詰めていく刑事の心の動きを柱に据えたため物語に一気に厚みと深みが生まれました。　現実の事件では半年後に逮捕されましたが、実際逮捕されるまで家庭内でこんな暗闘があったんじゃないかな、などと思わずゲスな想像をしてしまいました。

犯罪小説というよりも、「放火犯は・・・夫？」と疑惑を抱いた主婦の、苦悩と変容を描いた物語。

市井の人間の｢普通の幸せ」が、あまりにもあっさりと壊れていく様子は、つい「もしうちの夫が・・・」と妄想してしまう。「誰にでも起きうる」「人ごとではない」と思われて恐ろしい。彼女の心の動きは本当にリアルだと思う。読むのがしんどくなるくらい。

もう一人の主人公の話も同時進行するのだけれど、こっちは不必要とまでは言わないけど、まあ、添え物。こちらにも比重をおいて読めれば「犯罪小説」「大藪晴彦賞受賞」というのもわかる。

長い物語だけど、飽きることなく読みやすく、時間つぶしには最適。ただし、読後感は爽快！とは言いがたし。筆力のある作家の、リアルな話だからこそ、疲れる。・・・おもしろくはあるんだけど。

「最悪」と並ぶ、作者の代表作。

2002年度版　このミスで模倣犯に続く2位。
文春 2001　傑作ミステリーベスト10で6位。

本作品には三人の主要人物が登場する。
妻を交通事故でなくしたトラウマから立ち直れないでいる警部補　九野
家族4人で平凡に暮らす主婦　恭子
将来に目標もなく、ワルにもなりきれない高校生　祐輔

一見関係ない彼らの人生が、小都市で起こった放火事件をきっかけに、交錯していくという、クライムノベル。
些細な事件を、一級のサスペンスに仕上げ、一気に読ませる筆力はすばらしいの一語に尽きる。
是非おすすめの一冊である。

余談であるが、この作品以降、作者の作品がミステリーファンにとっては物足りないものとなっている。もう一度、この作品で得た驚きを味わいたい。
