登場人物はフリーターや契約社員・社会に出る前の大学生であったり身分不安定でどことなしか大人になりきれない情緒不安定を抱えている。まじめに働いている人間がどこかおかしいとも感じる。

こういった浮遊感の中で主人公たちが漂い、作者らしい文章表現が魂を明るい場所へ誘ってくれる。

「トンネルの中で交通情報を聞こうとするようにね。・・・・そして次に目を開けた瞬間、色が弾けたんです。僕らを包む緑はありとあらゆる色彩に変わり無限に広がり始めた、この世に存在するあらゆる色があの場所に集まってきたみたいな光景でした。」

１０年前の作品だが今の若者たちの心理を伝えているかもしれない。

もし、主人公と同年代だったら感想は異なっただろう。
角田光代さんの作品は、時代を切り取る描写が素晴らしい。
その礎であったと思えば、面白く読めるだろう。

主人公の悩み、無力感、漠然とした不安。
それらが他者からの言葉によって何かに気付く。
若者特有のモラトリアムだ。
模索している様が、読んでいて苦々しかった。
それは、もしかしたら、私自身が悩みもがいていた年頃に
もう戻りたくないのに、引き戻されてしまうほど
リアルな描写だったからかもしれない。

今の角田光代さんの作品に共感できるのは、
こういった若い頃の作品があるからで、
それはあたかも、人の人生のようだ。
年を取ることはとても面白い。

私も主人公のように、漠然とした不安を抱えて生きていたのだろう。

3.0 out of 5 stars 「変」であるが故のリアル？, 2004/4/19
野間文芸新人賞受賞作。

「変」な人のオンパレード。
でも、全て「変」じゃなく、ちょっと「変」。
このビミョーさが、ミョーにリアル。
結局のところ、自分の周りも（自分も含む）こんな風に、ちょっと「変」なのかな、と思ったりもした。

表題作の他、「もう一つの扉」と「ギャングの夜」という作品が収められているが、「もう一つの扉」は抽象的すぎて、少し理解できなかった。

「ギャングの夜」のこんな一文がココロに残った。

「それって、どこかへ行きたいってこと？それともここからどこにも行きたくないってこと？」
