　歴史小説で一人の人物を描く場合、どうしても主人公にした人物を英雄にしてしまう場合が多い。しかし、本作品は主人公・近藤勇を「英雄」としてではなく、「人間」として描いている。そこが本作品の特徴であり、いいところだ。

　人間、急に偉くなると自分を忘れてしまいがちだ。自分を忘れずにかつ地位も上がっていく人物はなかなかいるものではない。それは、100年前の人間だろうが、今に生きる人間だろうが変わることはない。歴史の教科書に出てくるような人間でさえ多少はあるものだ。これは永久に変わることのない不変のものだ。それが本作品を読むとわかる。

　本作品の序盤の近藤勇はとても好きだ。しかし、終盤の近藤は悪いが反面教師として心に残しておきたい。
