　本作品は、近藤勇の生涯を描いた作品の上巻です。上巻では新撰組の結成から、芹沢鴨の静粛、池田屋事件そして禁門の変の序盤までが描かれています。

　上巻の近藤勇は、正に「黄金時代」の到来といったところです。しかし、今後の近藤の末路を知ってしまっているものとしては、「ここで近藤は調子に乗りすぎたな」と思ってしまいます。そして、近藤の生涯をみると、「自分を忘れてはいけない」ということが言えると思います。これは、現在はもちろん未来永劫変わることのない教訓です。

　池波正太郎の作品を初めて読みましたが、なかなかいいです。今までは司馬遼太郎ばかり読んでいましたが、今後は池波作品も読んでみようかと思います。

　余談ですが、本作品は永倉新八が出番が多いです。筆者の新撰組の別作品の主人公が永倉なので、筆者はよほど永倉新八のことがよほど好きなのでしょう。

新選組を描いた作品は数々ある。しかし、この作品はその中でも際立っているのではないだろうか。近藤勇を中心に、新選組誕生から終末までを、読者を飽きさせることなく描いている。途中に挿入されている新選組関係者の遺談も、この作品に深みを与えている。
この１冊を読めば新選組のことは理解できる。そう言っても過言ではないだろう。新選組を知る上での、貴重な１冊だと思う。
