この表紙からもわかるように、良い意味でかなり軽いノリの青春小説です。
「歴史もの」という先入観は、これもまた良い意味での裏切りにあい、
特に土方・沖田のやりとりは現代の若者の普通の友人同士の関係を見ているようです。
他の小説ではまず描かれることのないこの土方像は、人によって好き嫌いが分かれるとは思いますが、
「身近にいたら友達になりたい」
と心底思うような、痛快な「バラガキ・土方」はとても魅力的で、作者の土方歳三に対する思いの溢れる作品だと思います。
嫌なことがあった時、落ち込んでいる時にこそ読みたい一冊です。

「岸和田少年愚連隊」の中場利一氏による、「バラガキ」時代の土方歳三。
新選組関連物としては異色な部類にわけられるのかもしれませんが、物語の所々に「バラガキ」の視点から見た事件や出来事の解説？があり、思わず頷かされました。
軽い読み物と思っていましたが、侮れません。
生真面目な研究者や歴史家、作家にはない視点が新鮮です。

思わず声を上げて笑いながら読めた新選組本というのは、本書が始めてのような気がする。江戸弁でまくしたてる、悪がきだけどどこか可愛い歳さん。テンポも良くさささっと読めました。だから逆に残るものは少なかったかもしれないけれど、気合を入れなくてもささっと読める新選組本ということで、よかったですね。
ただ拷問の場面はほんとに痛いです。
