ヤクザと一般民間人（と言ってもスレスレの商売をしている）が共通の敵を追って、北朝鮮を舞台に決死の追跡劇を繰り広げる。
途中に差し挟まれる現地の言葉といい、並大抵の取材では書けなかっただろうと想像しながら一気に読んだ。
参考文献の欄を見ると、やはりものすごい数の資料が並んでいた。
内容から言って映画化はおそらく無理だろうと思われるが、事実を絡めながら展開する物語は各人物像にさらなるリアリティを与え、非常に興味深い読み物になっている。

本作は『疫病神』の続編に当たるのだが、知らずに読んでも充分楽しめた。前作を示唆するくだりもチラホラ見られるが、ネタバレやうちわウケにならない程度に納まっている。

作者は実は出身は四国らしいが関西の文化に浸かって生活している。
生活者が繰り出す言葉は美しい。
東京弁で小説を書いたこともあったらしいが、ことごとく編集者に手直しされたそうだ。
小説の内容はもちろんだが、会話の妙味が楽しめるのも大きな魅力である。

確か直木賞か何かの候補までなったのですが、惜しくも取れませんでした。しかし、本当の傑作です。笑えるし、はらはらするし、最後は感動できます。本書が発売されたのはまだ、小泉訪朝前で、その後の様々な北に関する報道をみていると、本書の内容は相当奥深く真実に迫っていたとわかります。

絶対お薦めです。

　国際関係と世情を惜しみなく織り交ぜながら、堂々の大作である。南北朝鮮国境を越える場面は著者渾身の筆力だが、通俗的ではないかとも思った。死んだと思った人間が実は生きていたり、危機一髪で救助してくれたりと、安っぽいドラマのようになりがちだが、それをしてもなお、余りある筆力でカバーしている。

　特に素晴らしいのは、一人一人の人物描写の妙である。ともすれば野蛮になってしまいがちな桑原の描写や二宮の描写。そして、コケティッシュな悠紀の描写などは天下一品である。また、仕方なく揺れ動く心の葛藤が良く描かれていると思う。
　会話のやりとりのユーモアも、ページをめくる手を休ませず、著者の作品群の中では間違いなく一番と思う。
