　村野ミロシリーズ「顔に降りかかる雨」「天使に見捨てられた夜」と、「ダーク」の間をつなぐような内容の4つの短編が収録されています。　つなぐようなといいましたが、これは話し自体がつながる(同シリーズなのでつながるのは当たり前ですが)とは違い、前2作のハードボイルドぽっい内容と違い、「ダーク」から妖しげでおぞましいくも人間というものを描き始めた桐野さんの世界への変遷をうかがうことが出来るような内容になっていると思います。まさに今後の桐野さんの創作活動の種をまいたような短編集。現在「ローズガーデン」は妖しい花が咲き乱れています。

　ご存知ミロの短編集。今読み返してみたが、4話中3編は、探偵ミロの正当シリーズとして、十分面白い。隣室のゲイのトモさんや村善が、これまでの世界を補完している。

　しかし、いきなり第一話で河合博夫の登場である。ここが凄い。読み返すまで、この短編集がミロシリーズであることを忘れていた。河合博夫の物語のような気がしていた。それくらい、第一話のインパクトは大きい。自殺したミロの夫など、ミロのキャラクターを作るための小道具に過ぎなかったはずだ。彼を登場させる意義は、皆無である。彼を知りたい読者などいなかった。
　しかし、河合は確かに存在した。第一話で、それは私に忘れがたい強烈な印象を残した。やつがどのように死んだか、それがミロの読者にとっては、いくらかは知りたいことである。しかしそんなことは描写されない。河合が何者であり、何を考えていたか、ミロの読者(わたしですぅ)は全く求めていなかった。

　しかし、河合はその存在を主張した。ミロシリーズとは、全く異なる世界で登場した。そしてそれは、ミロシリーズとは別な世界を開いた。「ダーク」の芽は、すでにここに開いている。というか、桐野は小説世界の自由を宣言している。書きたいものを書く、と。書いてほしいものを書かない、とも取れるが。

『顔に降りかかる雨』『神に見捨てられた夜』に続く、女探偵村野ミロシリーズ。
今回は４つの短篇で１冊の文庫本になっていて、先にあげた２作ほど内容は重くない。
興味深いのは、表題作「ローズ・ガーデン」がミロと別れた男が、ミロを客観的捉えた視点で描かれている点だ。

他３篇も、新宿ならではの多国籍、多様で複雑な人間関係を生かして描かれていておもしろい。
ハードボイルドの肩書きを持つ作品ながら主人公の女探偵ミロは、大沢在昌氏が描くような賢明なキャラクターではない。
しかし、それが苦心するミロの人間らしさを生み、現実味を与えているのである。
ミロがシリーズ化されているのは、きっと著者もこのキャラクターを気に入っているからであろう。
また、ミロに会うのが楽しみになる一冊だ。
