我々が東南アジアの国を思う時、まず浮かぶのが亜熱帯地方特有の気候と街全体にみなぎるパワー、人々のしぶとさと大らかさではなかろうか。それは高度成長で一億総中流家庭となることにより、多くの日本人が忘れてしまった「生きる力」とも呼べるものであると思う。

本書はだらしなくて、いいかげんで、気が弱くて、でも優しい鴨志田氏（実物は知らない。文章から受ける人物像ね）が大都会バンコクですごした数年間を書いたエッセイである。旅行では見ることのできないバンコクのいかがわしさとそこに住むかなりいかがわしい日本人が描かれている。実際にこのいかがわしさに直面したら、私、生理的嫌悪感剥き出しにし、登場する人達に対しても「サイテーな男」と一蹴することだろう。しかし、著者の筆を!通すとこのいかがわしさこそが「生きる力」であり、愛すべきものであるようにすら感じられるのだ。

不覚にも感動しました。滂沱の涙に明け暮れ・・・って程ではありませんけど。

鴨ちゃんの文章って、別に上手くないけど（もっとも言われるほど下手とも思わない。西原ファミリーではゲッツ氏のほうが下手な気もたまにするし）今回は本当に染みた。

最初の単行本なので、比較的ネタが粒よりなのもあるけど
やっぱ白眉は「おともだち」の話でしょう。
これほど、地べたをはいずる人間の辛さを表現した話も
そうはない。特に4.5行久々に抜書きしたい箇所があった。

鴨ちゃん、気取らずにこういうの書いてよ。
本当に血で傷を表現したように生生しくて
書くのが辛いのもわかるけど鴨志田穣が文章でやっていくのに
一番切実で説得力のあるテーマだよ、これ。こういう軸があれば
いつもの「すごい事になってるにもかかわらず、今ひとつ
すごい感じがしないエッセイ」も絶対「すごいエッセイ」になるのに。

そんな鴨ちゃんの側にいて、一番苦労したであろう
西原さんの漫画も彼女らしいあっさりした画風ではあるが
例によって異様なまでに鋭く「おともだち」話もリリカルながらに
深い感慨をもたらす。

　ンビの漫画が面白い。

　頭をリラックスさせたい時、何か企画を考えたい時、
　右脳を刺激するエピソードが山積みです。
