子供の頃・・・将来の夢は○○になることです。
みんな何かになりたいっていう夢を持ったでしょう。
しかし中には自分で夢や希望を持つ前に（物心つく前に）
一つの芸に秀でたり周囲の期待から進む道が決まり
けなげに自信満々でその夢に向かって突っ走る天才達も
たくさんいます。
奨励会に集まる少年達もまさに全国で天才と呼ばれ

怖いモノ無しの自信満々でプロ棋士になるためだけ
で上京してきます。
でも現実は、強者共の中で今までの自信やプライド
はズタズタにされ２０代半ばでプロ棋士になる夢も
潰えてボロボロの状態で世間にほおり出されます。

勉強も遊びも恋愛も女性もお酒も汚れも・・・
何一つ成就していないうえ夢さえ失った２６歳の男に
一体何ができるのだろう？

全国の天才少年だった、夢を叶えれなかった青年達の
その後を壮絶に描く涙モノ作品。
時々行く将棋クラブに主人公成田氏が来るのだが未だ
お会いしたことがない。

将棋も人生も紙一重。
人生で最も大事な若い時代の全てを賭けて若者は将棋に挑む。結果は誰にもわからない。羽生のような特別な存在は別にして、通常の天才たちがプロの棋士に選ばれるかどうかの判定は実力以外のもっと別のものが関与する。
著者はこの本を書くために将棋世界の編集長をやめた。

本人の一生懸命の努力にもかかわらず、選ばれなかったものへの応援歌を書くために。

試練の時に対面している人にとって是非読んでいただきたい本である。

雑誌「将棋世界」の元編集長であった大崎善生氏の著書．本作で講談社ノンフィクション賞を受賞．

内容は主に奨励会に所属していた数々の会員、それも夢半ばで破れて奨励会を退会していった会員達のその後の人生について書かれています．その中でも、著者と同じ北海道出身のある奨励会員のその後を中心に作品はまとめられています．

とにかく心が動かされる作品です．この感情を何と表現すればよいのかわかりません．ひとつ言えることは涙が止まらなくなるということ．著者と同様に泣き、怒り、心配して、喜び、読み終えた後には他の本では味わえないような多くの感情が渦巻いています．

夢を語るのは簡単ですが、それをかなえるためには途方もない努力と才能、運が必要になります．才能だけがあっても、そしてそれに努力を加えたとしても、時には残りが欠けてしまって残念な結果になることもあります．そうなった時に人はどのような思いを抱いて後の人生を過ごしていくのでしょうか．一握りの才能と成功を同時に手にした天才達の影に隠れて夢を捨てる、または変更せざるをえなくなった天才達が多数描かれています．将棋のことを知らない方でもお薦めします．ぜひ一度手にとってみてください．
