なんか島荘が好みそうな…実際に似たネタの本を書いてたような…そんな印象を持つトリックや真相だったかな。まあ島荘が自分は好きなので、十分に楽しめたけど。

鬼が出る戦時中の屋敷で起こった密室事件に、直感型の八神探偵が挑む！のイントロダクションなのに、いきなり全平仮名の学校から帰った少年のエピソードから始まり、ついでアメリカに留学した女子高生の事件に続いていき、鬼も戦争も出てこんから、あら？これって中篇だったの？みたいな疑問を抱いたが、ある点において共通していた。その狙いはたしかに上手いとは思ったが、なにせおまけの２短編自体はさほどの話でもなかったので、まあ鬼密室に徹してくれてても良かったとは思うのね。

肝心の表題作の密室事件とかよく出来ていたが、解決する探偵のキャラがいまいち好きになれなかった。探偵助手の女も、ただ調べて報告するくらいのキャラで「私」の一人称で語られてるわりにはキャラが薄っぺら。鬼密室事件の関連で、金融オヤジとその愛人事件も扱われるが、それのトリックもなかなか上手く、それと鬼密室事件の２つの類似した大きなトリックが用意されてるので、なかなか濃い内容となっている。

いわゆる「本格」の行き詰まりの象徴のような
短・中・長の三篇が収録された作品。

もはや奇怪なお館も珍奇なトリックも出尽くした感があるのは
何も今に始まったことじゃあない。
「本格」派の方々は，既存のトリックに自分なりのアレンジを加える。
そのアレンジは，普通の人なら（＝おそらくそおトリックをしかけた犯人も含めて）
誰も知らないような微細な，もしくは最新の自然科学上の知識か，
文章構成上の工夫という形になることが多い。
それらの工夫がなおさら「本格」の行き詰まりを
象徴してしまっているような気がするのだが。

以後の作品で，歌野氏はすぐれたトリックを考案し，
作品として発表しているので「本格」もまだまだ捨てたものではないのかもしれない。
しかしながらやはり，過去の推理小説の大家が言ったように
「推理小説なんて，人生のうちで何本も書けるものではない」のかもしれない。

いくつかの凡作の上に，後世に残るような作品は書かれるのだろう。
