呼人は12歳まで普通に生活していた少年だった。
だが、それから彼の時はぱったりと動くことをやめてしまったのだ。
友達、義親、回りすべてが自分だけを残し年をとっていく。
呼人は自分がすべきことを探すため旅に出ることを決意する・・・

死は摂理である。
そんな常識から取り残された呼人。
私たちの中には「死にたくない」「年を取りたくない」
という人がたくさんいると思う。
実際に、私もそう考えていた。
はたして、本当にそれは幸せなのだろうか。
成長できない自分。
周りはそんな自分を独り残し、死んでいく。
「死にたくない」「年を取りたくない」
と考えている人は是非これを読んでもう一度考えてほしい。

おそらく野沢氏は後年こういった作品を書きたかったと私は思っている。
おもしろい。それだけだ。
ただ、惜しむらくは解説が。
日大教授とも思えない適当な解説が付いている。
解説を読んで購入するかどうか検討する方々へ。
こういった本作以外のストーリーが大半を占める、なにを解説したいのかわからない「解説」が昨今増えているが、野沢尚氏の後半の世界が好きならばこの本の解説は「解説」など読まずに購入してもよいかと思われる。
私は大変ロマンと時代を感じて、そして野沢氏らしさを感じて読んだ。
ただし、私が読んだなかで一番ではないので☆は4つ。

12歳で成長が止まった呼人。そこには科学者の恐るべき罠が仕掛けられていました。ストリーテリングに定評のある野沢　尚。確かにぐいぐい引き込まれます。それでも、この重い問題に、人間の根源と言える生と死について、このラストに納得できません。この問題を真剣に追い続けた末に野沢　尚は、とうとう抱えきれなくなったとしか考えられませんでした。確かに呼人がこの世に生を受けた事は呼人のせいではありません。人は自らの意志で生まれてくることはできませんから。それでも、呼人が死に至るまで苦しみ続ける（こんな残酷なことはありませんが）事の方が救いがあったような気がします。呼人を自ら人体実験にしたような母親に愛情があったとも思えませんでした。この結末を野沢　尚が希望の光として書いたとしたら、私には逆に絶望感しか残りませんでした。それでも、尚、多くの方に読んでいただきたい。科学者、生物学者の方のご意見を伺いたいところです。
