この本の「あとがき」（文庫版のほうではなく）で、著者は「これは私小説ではない」と書いているが、のちに講談社刊の『IN・POCKET』でこの作品を「これは私小説である」としている。実際、同著者『白い薔薇の淵まで』で山本周五郎賞を受賞した際の記念エッセイに、その時パートナーであった女性の子供のためにこの『感情教育』を書いたと記してあった。この本の初めに「Hに捧ぐ」と書いてあることからしても、これは著者の私小説だろう。
中山氏はこの作品を、「わたし」という言葉を遣う一人称で書かず、なるべく説明的にならないように那智（おそらく相手の女性）と理緒（おそらく中山氏）の恋愛を三人称で書いたのだと思われる。しかし、やはり中山氏は自身のこの過去の恋愛を思い、書こうとする時、感情的にならざるを得なかったのだろう。那智が育ってきた過程、結婚し離婚に至るまでの過程がいかに悲惨なものであり、理緒と結びつくことにつながっていったのかという点が、これでもかとばかりに読者に“訴える”ように書かれてしまっている。いかにも「私たちは苦しい恋をしたのだ」と見せつけられると同時に、いわゆる“作家的立場”から書けていないと感じた。当事者としての感情・視点に偏ることなく、強固に“作家的視点”を持ち続けながら書くことができたならば、読み手を納得させ、小説としても感動の深いものになっていたと思うのだが…。
中山氏は、自身の恋愛を思う時は、どうあがいても“作家的”にはなれない人なのだろう。そんな点もまた、人間臭くていいのだが、書くからには、それが私小説でも登場人物に対して心を鬼にしてほしいと思った。

那智と理緒という、それぞれ過酷な生い立ちを持つ２人の女性が運命的？に出会い、惹かれ合う話。文章は簡潔だが、登場人物の細かな仕草や表情にまで神経が行き届いており、繊細。特に、２人の生い立ちがそれぞれ語られる前半部はテンポ良くダイジェストされていて没入できた。

ただし。２人が出会ってからの後半部は正直期待はずれ。本当にこの２人の恋は運命的なものだったのか、その必然性がどうにも理解できない。２人のキャラクターが、肉体こそ「うりふたつ」だが精神的には完全に凸凹（ある意味シンメトリカルに）として設定されていないことによるのだろうか。その点も含め、「飽きた、もう読みたくない」とは決して思わなかったものの全体に中途半端な、何かが足りないといった読後感を持った。

全く違う環境で育ってきた（途中で繋がりはあるらしく思えるが、結局不明)女性二人が、出会って、結びつく…。

中山氏の作品はこれで２冊目なのだが、なるほど、氏の作品には「腰を据えてとりかからねば」ならない時もあるというのが頷けた。

そして氏の作品に出てくる主要人物は、とかく感情表現の起伏が激しい。これは氏の経験によるものだろうかはたまた…。
しかし、これは隣の芝生では決してないのだ。
ヘテロの恋愛もそうだろうが、同性同士の恋愛で修羅場になることだってしょっ中だし、激しく燃えるのもまた事実。

ヘテロの不倫もバレたら修羅場だろうが、それでもまだ世間は納得する。理不尽だが同性が浮気相手となると、更にひた隠しにしなければならないのが実情。本人同士ではなく、周りに理解を得られる事なぞ絶対的に少ないから。

物足りない、との事なのだが、確かに氏の作品ではそうかもしれない。
でも、私は却って安心したのだった(苦笑）

自分もどちらかというと、自虐的な所が「那智」、恋愛観は「理緒」のような人間なので…。

祝福するのは本人達のみでも。
それでもラストは素直にやっぱり嬉しかった。
