1964年東京都生まれ。’87年、上智大学文学部卒業。同年、朝日新聞社入社。「週刊朝日」編集部に在籍していた''93年12月より、新宿西口の段ボールハウスで生活する人々の取材をはじめる。本書は第20回講談社ノンフィクション賞を受賞した。聞き書き『新宿ホームレスの歌――「放浪歌人の70余年』（朝日新聞社）がある。

1956年福岡県生まれ。在日朝鮮人2.5世。’76年、東京写真大学卒業。出版社嘱託の後、’83年よりフリー。第28回平凡社太陽賞準賞。’96年より新宿、大阪、ソウル等で写真展「新宿ダンボールハウス」を開催。『中世を創った人びと』（新書館）、『魂の流れゆく果て』（光文社）でも写真を担当している。

この本には多種多様なホームレスが登場する。彼らは、路上生活を始めるときには、それほど長く続くとは思っていなかったはずだ。しかし、いったん社会や家族、友人などと絆を切れしまうと、なかなか元の生活には戻れない。誰もがいとも簡単に社会と隔絶されてしまう、生きる寄る辺のなさが描かれている。

それと同時に、どんな状況でも、人は人と生きようとする姿も浮かび上がってくる。50歳を超えた男性ホームレスが3人で暮らし、お互いを「お父さん、お母さん、娘」と呼び合っている。同性愛者のホームレスは、路上で仲間に祝ってもらった誕生日に、「こんな底まで来て、（一緒に）笑える人間に出会った。今の方が幸せ。サッチみたいな友達ができて」と語る。

人が人とともに生きることの意味、家族や共同体など群れで生きるとはどういうことかなど、いろいろ考えさせられた。数年前に書かれたものだが、古びたところは一切ない。今後もぜひ読み継がれていって欲しい、☆５つでは足りないほどのノンフィクションの名著である。
