「すべてがひっくり返る驚愕の結末とは」という言葉に惹かれて買ったのですが、うーん、確かにひっくり返ってはいるんですけれど、犯人はどうしてその人を殺さなければならなかったのか、どのようにして殺したのか、というようなことが描ききれておらず、読んだあとに何の感情も湧いてこないというか、あまりにあっけない結末に「え、それで終わり！？」と少し物足りない気がしました。

北森氏の作品の魅力は、その場の空気やにおいまで感じ取れるようなうまい文章、登場人物の魅力的なキャラクターにあると思っています。『花の下にて春死なむ』の工藤哲也とか『凶笑面』の蓮丈那智とか。今回のストーリーの性質上、あまり主人公について詳しく書くこともできなかったのでしょうが、なんだかぼやけたまま最後まで来てしまった、という感じが否めない。
過去から届く手紙の主の意図は？なぜ阿坂龍一郎あてに届くのか？男子高校生は本当に自殺だったのか？などの謎は幾分おもしろかったものの、”傑作”というには程遠いできではないかなあと思います。

　1998年に出た単行本の文庫化。
　著者のデビュー第２作として刊行されるはずで、ゲラ刷りまで行ったところで発売中止になったといういわくつきの作品。北森ファンが固定化されてきたところで、なんとか陽の目を浴びることになった。
　幾層にも及ぶトリックが凄い。逆転の逆転で、結末にはあっと言わされる。人物や時間がバラバラに語られており、誰がどの人物に当たるのか、この事件はいつ起こったのかというのがポイントになっている。良く練り込まれた作品だ。
　しかし、一方で物足りない点が残るのも事実。ラストにがっかりするというか。悪い意味でだまされていたような気持ちになってしまう。
　北森作品に特有の緊張感、凄惨なストーリーは期待通り。

プロットを懲りすぎていて､どうしてこの展開？と言う場面もある。
映像化には無理があるかもしれないけれども、おもしろさは認める作品だと思う。
