1941年1月兵庫県生まれ。早大法学部卒。会社勤務を経て、1968年からフリー。1985年『大君の通貨』で第4回新田次郎賞を受賞。1994年『恵比寿屋喜兵衛手控え』で第110回直木賞を受賞。主な作品に『手跡指南神山慎吾』『お尋者物書同心居眠り紋蔵』『揚羽の蝶半次捕物控』『隼小僧異聞物書同心居眠り紋蔵』『八州廻り桑山十兵衛』など、近著に『百助嘘八百物語』（講談社）、『啓順凶状旅』（幻冬舎）がある。

4.0 out of 5 stars 連作小説の醍醐味を充分味わえる作品, 2004/12/12
藤木紋蔵は居眠りという奇病(ナルコレプシー？)で定廻りを外され、例繰方(事件の記録をつける)に３０年近く勤めています。
『密約』は今まで読んだ４冊の中で最も良い出来の作品です。時代物とミステリーがうまく混合されています。
この作者は普通の長編を書くよりも、色々な事件を経ていく中で、少しづつ本筋が見えてくるという連作風のものを書かせたらうまいです(著者の別シリーズ作品である『八州廻り桑山十兵衛』でもその方式を採用しています)。
紋蔵は奇病のせいで、奉行所内では疎んじられていますが、剣術は
「年に一度の組屋敷内演技場で、南北の両御奉行が参列して行われる剣術と柔術の仕合いには今でも参加して、剣術では百数十人のうちの五、六人のところにはいつも勝ち残っている。もとより毎日、素振りと居合の鍛錬を欠かしていない」(『密約』３００ページ)というくらいの腕前だし(紋蔵は５０近い年齢)、法律知識だって上役が判断を迷うような判例について、アドヴァイスを求められるというくらいです。
『居眠り』も『八州』(すぐ上役と衝突する)も実力はあるけど、何らかの問題で、今の職にいる人物です。そして宮仕えの身であり、数々の不正に対して時折抵抗できない事もあります。これが作品に陰影を与えています。
豊富な法律についての記述も面白さを支えています。ここまで詳しい作品はそうないでしょう。
この作品だけでも面白いですが、シリーズ一作目からちゃんと読めば､更に面白さが増すと思います。
