一読しての印象は「ヤラレタ！」であった。初めて同世代の小説家が出てきたと思った。もちろん若書きというべき部分はあるだろう。しかし『インディヴィジュアル・プロジェクション』あたりで流行作家(?)の仲間入りをしてしまってからの作品にはない、書くことの禍々しさとの真摯な対峙がここにはあるように思わてならない。（勝手な感想だが、著者のこれ以降の作品は、書けば書けてしまうという事実に安住しているような気がして仕方がない。）
群像新人賞の選者としてこの作品を読んだ後藤明生は「ラストが文学的に過ぎる」といっていたように記憶しているが、『挟み撃ち』を書いた頃を思い出して照れかくしをしているのではないか、と疑ってみたくなる。

~映画や小説を巡る物語にまみれて生きている「私」が、自ら語り出そうとするときに遭遇する過酷な失語の状態から、いびつで無軌道な「小説（映画）」が生成する瞬間を描く。意識的かつ真摯な「小説論」であり「教養小説」。といって語り口は不真面目でさえあります。「気狂いピエロ」+ブルース・リーという目眩がするようなアクションシーンで、道化を演じてみ~~せる余裕もかっこいい。映画や小説に浸かった青春を送った人は読んでいて胸に痛いところがあるかも。~

　「アメリカの夜」で阿部和重は、「延々と循環を繰り返す自意識」という古典的、「文学的」なテーマに敢えて取り組んでみせた。既製の「文学」を革新した現代小説として評価されがちな「アメリカの夜」だが、この作品は極めて真っ当な近代小説として評価されるべきではないか。

　なるほど、先行テクストからの様々な引用、核心を回避し続ける語り口・・・。この小説の魅力のひとつが、そうした現代小説的な意匠であることは確かだ。しかし、真に重要なことはそこにあるのではない。見る「私」と見られる「私」の乖離、そこに導入される「鏡」という小道具。そしてまた小説の基調をなす「光」と「闇」の対比・・・。それらの古典的とも言える小説技法を衒いなく用いたという選択にこそ、この小説における阿部和重の最大の賭けがある。そして、この彼の反時代的な大胆さこそが、「アメリカの夜」という小説を非常に格調の高いものにしているのだ。
　私たちはこの小説の中で「ドン・キホーテ」が何度も言及されていることに無自覚であるべきではないだろう。
