1950年名古屋市生まれ。明治大学政経学部卒。1974年『神狩り』でデビュー。1977年『神々の埋葬』で角川小説賞。1982年『最後の敵』で日本SF大賞受賞。『崑崙遊撃隊』『謀殺のチェス・ゲーム』『闇の太守』などSF、冒険小説、伝奇時代小説を発表。1996年『女囮捜査官』で本格推理に活躍の舞台を移し『妖鳥（ハイピュイア）』『螺旋（スパイラル）』『阿弥陀（パズル）』『仮面（ペルソナ）』など力作を発表。

「ミステリオペラ」がめでたく高い評価を得られたことで、今まで一部の読者のみが知る存在だった山田正紀ミステリもようやく正しい評価を得られつつあるようで、喜ばしい。

山田正紀は非常に多作であり、かつその小説のジャンルがあっという間に様々な方面へと軽々越境してしまうため、全体を把握するのはそう易しくない。とはいえ、作品単位で見れば、ほとんどの場合裏切られることはない希有な作家である。

本作「神曲法廷」は、「女囮捜査官」から疾走し始めた山田ミステリ、最初の頂点とも言える傑作である。どうにも中身を説明できないので、まずは読んで頂くしかない。帯や裏表紙になんと書いてあろうとあまり気にしないことだ。そして読み始めてしばらくは、本当にこれが面白いミステリなのか？と疑いたくなるかも知れない。

しかし・・・・・最後まで読んでいただければ、きっと・・・・。
「長靴をはいた犬」がこの続編なので、間違ってもこちらより先に「長靴」を読んだりしないでください。一生後悔します。

凄いトリックに、文庫版で約６５０ページ、質・量ともに申し分なし。読み応え、読み終わった後の満足感も言うことなし。様々なジャンルの小説を発表しつづけている山田正紀の、ミステリの代表作になるだろう大作です。

雰囲気作りのとてもうまい作者、本作ではダンテの神曲を下敷きにし（もちろん神曲を読んでいなくとも十分に楽しめます）、緊迫感のある異様な空気に包まれた世界とそこで起こる事件、神の声を聞いた男・探偵役の佐伯神一郎の姿を描き出していきます。などといろいろ書いてみても、この独特の世界・雰囲気は伝わらないでしょう。どうぞ読んで驚いてください。

山田正紀、すごい作家だと再確認させられました。
