　多くの「恐妻家」を称する作家は、エッセイにおいて、妻の悪口を書いたり、不満を述べる。家庭内で、そのようなことは暗黙の了解になっているのであろう。
　北杜夫氏の妻宛のギャグの中で「出かけようとしても化粧とか何とかで時間がかかり、、こちらは、そこらのものを壊さないようにセミのごとく柱にしがみついていなければならない」などというものがある。
　こういうものがさりげなく出てくると本当におかしいのであるが、全編、ここまで書かれてしまうと、ちょいとなあ、という理不尽な感慨を持ってしまう。
　真偽不明の愛人問題を含め、妻のねただけで一冊作るのは、やはり、ふさわしくないと思う。

　北杜夫のエッセイは久しぶりに読みましたが、本書は妻との結婚から現在までの夫婦間での問題などが書かれたもので、自身の躁鬱病のことや、株に熱中しての失敗や愛人との話なども書かれています。夫婦の始まりから戦い、折り合い、そして晩年とそれぞれの妻との関りを正直に書いています。
