室町幕府初代将軍・足利尊氏の生涯を、歴史の表舞台にのしあがる決断の時から死に至るまで描いた作品。

足利尊氏というと、皇国史観では逆賊・悪臣の筆頭にまつりあげられ、その事蹟からも周到な戦略家・政治家の印象が強いのですが、本作ではそういった人の上に立つ者の冷徹さは稀薄で、家族を愛し、家庭を大事にし、人との強い関わりを絶やさないマイホームパパという雰囲気が濃厚です。

そのせいか、そんな尊氏を影で支え続けた弟・足利直義に意外や多くの筆が割かれ、大変魅力的に描かれています。

やや呑気にもみえる兄・尊氏を、全面的にバックアップするしっかり者の弟・直義‥‥実にクールながらさりげに熱く、数々の史実や逸話をもとにその人間的な温かみがしっかり書き込まれているところが??いです。微笑を湛えながら時に鋭く、時に優しく接する直義は凛と美しく、武士として、父として、ひとりの男としての毅然とした姿勢がぐっと伝わってきて、じんときます。

もちろん、南北朝の複雑な時代背景も、ありがちなつらつらの説明調ではなく非常に簡潔かつ平易に語られているためわかりやすく、さらっと読んでイッパツ理解ＯＫ。

足利尊氏の生涯に深く関わる脇役ひとりひとりを丁寧に描くことで個性を際立たせ、誰が何を考えてそこにいるのか、すっきりと表現されているので、南北朝の揺れ動く陣容が場面ごとにちゃんと把握できて、この時代に馴染みの薄い読者にも優しい作品に仕上がっています。
