この作品は、推理小説としてみれば完成度の高いいい作品だと思う。
主人公の男性が大人になりきれていないなど、読む人によって多少好みは別れるかもしれないが、それでも読む物をぐいぐいと惹きつけてやまない力がある。
ただ、どうしてもラストが納得できなかった。
確かに、人の命より大切な物など、この世に存在しないとは思う。
だからといって、それ自身にはなんの罪科もない「文化遺産」に対して、仮にも美術を志したことがあるはずの主人公の決断はあまりにも軽率で独り善がりだったのではないかと感じた。
最後のページで唖然としたまま放り出されてしまったせいか、読後感が今ひとつすっきりしなかったのが残念でならない。
ラストシーン、作者自身も消化しきれないまま書いてしまったのではないか、そんな風にも感じてしまった。

97年度版このミス30位
97年の初読の際にはそれほど印象に残らなかったのだが、あらためて読み直してみると、なかなかよい。500ページ強の作品だがグイグイと作品に引き込まれた。
この作品は作者の初期の作品であるが、この作品にも見られる、「大人になりきれない主人公（男性）」と、「気が強く、主人公より年下でありながら、主人公を最も理解し、温かく見守り続ける女性」という登場人物の組み合わせは、この後の作品にもしばしば見ることができる。「ワンパターン」と見る向きもあるかもしれないが、ここまで徹底しているのだから、作者が確立した「作風」として理解したいところだ。少なくとも、私にとっては、愛すべき「ワンパターン」である。

「テロリストのパラソル」に続き、この作品も日本から海外への「心の旅」を体感できました。今回も　文章の中に、「名文」をいくつも発見でき、１文で、心の琴線を震わせることのできる、すばらしい　表現力、描写力を感じます。クライマックスの場面は「川端康成」の「雪国」の最後の情景を思い浮かばせました。　本当に、悔しい気持ちです。この先藤原さんの、作品が　表れてこないことは。
