800ページにも及ぶ大作です。デビュー作『慟哭』とよく似た構造を持った作品で、久我という警官を主人公にしたエピソードと、鷲尾という警官を主人公にしたエピソードと、記憶を失った青年を主人公にしたエピソードが入れ替わり立ち替わり展開されます。『慟哭』ではエピソードは2種類でしたので、更に複雑さを増していることになります。どのエピソードにも、公安警察、売春、強姦、喧嘩といったネガティヴなイメージを与えるキーワードがちりばめられているのであまり気持ちよく読めるわけではありませんが、なぜかつづきを読まずにはいられない吸引力を持っています。 個人的には久々に読書の為に夜更かしをした作品となりました。

最後にある人物の名前が告げられることによってどんでん返しが行われる点も『慟哭』と同じです。但し、『慟哭』ではその後に真相の説明が行われるのに対して、本作ではある人物の名前が告げられると共に物語は終わってしまいます。それによってかなり多くの伏線が解決されないままに放り出されることになっており、その点に不完全燃焼感を感じる読者が多いことでしょう。しかし、後からじっくりひとつひとつの伏線について考えてみると、じつに奥深い作品だということがわかります。ぜひ再読してみたいという気持ちになりますが、あまりに長いのでちょっと躊躇してしまいますね。

公安刑事・久我、悪徳刑事・鷲尾、記憶喪失の「僕」。この３人の物語の繰り返しで話が進む。久我と鷲尾は時代が異なり、「僕」はどの時代か分らない。それぞれに関連性のありそうなキーワードが出ては消えて・・・と続いて引きこまれた。独立した話としても十分に面白いがそれがどう繋がるのかがという部分で興味をずっと引きつけた。

ただ、最終的にそれがどう繋がったのかというのが微妙なところ。十分に楽しめたのは確かなのだが・・・。

『慟哭』の最後の衝撃より、衝撃に行き着くまで時間がかかりました。

すなわち３つの話から最終章に結びつく関連を理解するのに、読んだ後何度も回想しなければ、？？？の連続なのです。
こういうプロットは貫井作品ならではですが、内容が内容だけに一気に読めてしまいます。
読んだ後に残る作品というのは、
感動作だけではないのだと実感させられるマニアックな一冊です。
