どこまでいっても深みにはまらない、遠浅海岸を歩いているような話。人物、展開、描写、どれをとっても、とにかく浅い。締め切りに追われた作者が、思いついた言葉を、右から左へと書き並べた感じがする。ところがこれが、大ベストセラーになったというのだから驚きだ。

中身は三流ポルノそのものだが、こんな中途半端な内容では、官能すらしない。冴えない中年の男と女がセックスしているだけなのに、死とか怖いとか、ばかばかしいにもほどがある。読者は、「~かもしれない」「~なのか」「~といえなくもない」などなど、恐るべきワンパターンで、主人公のあいまいな考えに永遠と振り回されるだけなのだ。

確かに見方を変えれば、そんな作者の、幼稚で、陳腐な思考を垣間見られるのは、それなりに楽しめるかもしれないが。

この本は一時期、本当に一世を風靡していたという記憶のもとに読んでみました…が。感想としては「？？？」。。

どうして、このふたり、こうなるのかがわかりません。そして、おふたりとも、そんなに死ぬの生きるのと大騒ぎするほどの理由はなく、またそう思わせるほどの魅力的な人物とは思われませんでした。そもそも服の趣味からして、よく読むとちょっとヘンなのでは…。や、それは関係ないか。

しかし、この本はベストセラーになり、そして映画やらドラマやらになったのですよね。これはやはり、なんといっても本の「タイトル」がよかったのでしょう。「失楽園」という響きに、なんとなーく「そそる」モノがあるのでしょうね。「本歌取り」じゃないけどさ…。

本音ですごい本だと思いました。結末ははじめから見えてるけど、愛の盛り上がり方を描くのがすっごくうまい。改めて男女のちがいをすごくミクロの視点で気づかされた(｢話を聞かない男…｣ほどマクロではない)。セックスを通じての微妙な男女の心理の違いがすごくうまく表現されてました。

不倫といえど、心から愛せる人を見つけて、愛を深めていくってのはほんと素晴らしいなぁと思いました。クライマックスに近づくにつれて至福の時を迎えるのだけど、下の一言で正直泣けました。

「あなたを好きになって、恋して愛してたから、とっても美しく綺麗になれたし、毎日毎日、生きている意味がわかったし、無論、いっぱい苦しむことがあったけど、その何十倍も嬉しいことがあって、死ぬほど愛したおかげで、塊が敏感になって、何を見ても感動できたし、いろいろなものに、みんな命があるのもわかったし…。」

この本は、５０代で閉職に就いた男の物語ですが、何を持って幸せをするかってとこあたりから、この春就職する人にもぜひ読んでほしいと思いました。自分も４月入社の身として、この時にこの本にめぐり合えてよかったと思います。

「ひとつ視点を変えると、それまで大切であったものがさほど大切でなく、逆に、それまでさほど貴重と思われなかったものが、急に貴重に思えてきた。」それがtoo lateな人もいたりと、キャリア組の切なさも描かれてたね。何をもって幸せとするか、それを再考するいい機会になると思います。
