著者紹介

1925年青森県弘前市生まれ。ベトナム戦争の報道カメラマンとして著名な沢田教一氏の夫人。1956（昭31）年、青森県三沢市の米軍基地PXショップ“小島写真店”に勤めていて、同店にアルバイトにきた沢田氏と知り合って結婚。1970（昭45）年、沢田氏がプノンペル南方国道2号線でゲリラの狙撃を受けて壮烈な最期をとげるまでの15年間、東京、サイゴン、香港と沢田氏と苦楽を共にする。沢田氏の死後横浜に住んでいたが、1982（昭57）年郷里の弘前市に居をかまえ、現在レストラン「グルメさわだ」を経営している。

写真を見て驚くのは、兵士が向かってくるシ-ンがある、ということ。つまり、攻撃の先頭にいる兵士より、先に行った沢田が振り返って、先頭の兵士を撮っているということだ。地雷が埋まっている地域でもそんなことがあった、と「ライカでグッドバイ」に描かれている。

賞をとっているからという理由で、何度も見たことがある写真も印象的だけれど、他の写真にも、同じテンションが感じられる。当たり前といえば当たり前だけれど。普通は高価な写真集を、文庫という形でこんなに安く買うことができて、なんて幸運なことだろうと思った。「ライカで...」に描かれていなくて、知りたい、と思われる多くの部分を、この本によって知ることができたのも、幸運なことだ。それでも、ほんの少し、前より彼に近づいたとしか思えない。ひとりの人間を知る、というのはなんて難しいことなのか。

ベトナム戦争では、峰弘道や一之瀬泰三など日本からも多くのカメラマンが現地へ赴いています。沢田教一は、その中でもっとも有名なカメラマンで、世界報道写真コンテスト大賞やピューリッツァー賞を受賞しています。基本的に戦争写真が中心なので万人向けではありません。しかし、本書は単なる文庫本ではなく、過酷なベトナムの戦場の第一線で活躍した一流のカメラマンについてのコンパクトにまとめた貴重な記録となっています。
