最初は故伊丹十三映画風の業界内幕ものかなと思い、期待して読んだのですが、
面白かったのはそういった部分だけで、ミステリーとしても小説としても期待はずれでした。

なんせ、
仕事そっちのけで、元不倫相手の妻の変死を調べるヒロインの心理がさっぱりわからず、
それを見逃すどころかむしろ応援する上司が怪しすぎで、
約10年前の作品だというのに、ここ20年は聞いたことないような死語の連発が気色悪く、
漫画かアニメのようにやたらどもる台詞が気に障り、
漫画やアニメのようなキャラクター造形にこのままの人物なわけがないと思ったら、
そのままの人物でありなおかつ犯人であることには意外性がなく、
盛り上がらないクライマックスに失望し、
ルパン三世もどきの変装に失笑しました。

名探偵コナンだの金田一少年だの方がまだマトモそう？

ヒロインはスーパーで万引き犯を取り締まる隠密警備員。愛人の殺人容疑を晴らすために独自の捜査を進めるという設定。しかし私は、社員を続けながら、自由に捜査を進められるヒロインの設定に呆れて読み進める気がしなかった。勤務時間内にそんな自由時間が取れる会社がある訳ないだろう。最初の頃、そんなヒロインの自由行動を許す上司は絶対怪しいと思ったものだ。

また、作者の後続の作品にも共通するのだが、ヒロインの愛人を見る眼が甘すぎるのである。まさしく盲目である。その癖、ヒロインは自分を知性の高い自立した女と考えているのである。どういう読者を対象に考えているのだろう。最後に明かされる犯人の正体にヒロインが途中で気付かないのも、絶対不自然である。リアルなミステリが書きたいのか、安手の変装が通用する子供向けのミステリが書きたいのかハッキリしろ、と言いたい。それ程、ミステリ的には脆弱な創りなのである。

全くの駄作で読むに値しない作品。

著者がジュニア小説で活躍していた、というだけのことはあって、文章はこなれているし、保安士、いわゆる万引Ｇメンという、最近、テレビでよく見かける職業が主人公という設定も面白い。最初の、万引きのシーンから一気にストーリーにはいれた。そういう意味で、序盤はなかなか良かったように思う。
ただ、枚数制限のある乱歩賞にほぼ共通して存在するのだが、特にこの作品のラストは尻切れトンボという感じがしてしまったし、その前の謎解きというか、トリックに関してはかなり無理があるように思えてならない。また、犯人の動機という点も陳腐だ。
序盤の良さが、終盤に来て一気に失速してしまった感じがして残念だ。
