実は、私が始めて読んだ有栖川作品。これまでは氏の関連書籍（『作家の犯行現場』メディアファクトリー）や、対談、ガイドブックなどは読んでいたのだが肝心の小説がまだだった。まずは試しにと、この短編集から読み始めた。氏が書いた最初のシリーズ、推理作家の有栖川（「私」）と江神コンビに続く第二シリーズ、有栖川＆犯罪学者火村英生コンビの第二短編集。

正直言って、これは嬉しい驚きだった。面白い。文章も、勝手に抱いていたイメージ（日本の推理作家の文章は何故かよみにくい）に反して、読みやすい。そして、デビュー当時からの「本格推理の旗手」という評はまさしくその通りだった。カー、クイーンなどに代表される純粋なロジック、パズラーの楽しみを存分に味わえる。この本の表題作にみられるような（犯罪現場の天井一面の蝶の標本！）特異な舞台設定もそうだ。とかくリアリズム、社会性重視に偏り勝ちな昨今の推理小説界の中でも貴重な、「いい薫り」のする推理小説。

『ブラジル蝶の謎』『妄想日記』『彼女か彼か』『鍵』『人喰いの滝』『蝶々がはばたく』の6編からなる短編集です。短編だとどうしてもひとつのトリックの解明だけが主眼となるので小説としての満足度はあまり高くありませんが、タイトル作『ブラジル蝶の謎』における、なぜ犯人は天井一面に被害者のコレクションである蝶の標本を貼り付けたという謎などは、シンプルなだけに説得力が高いと感じました。

『彼女か彼か』は被害者がゲイといういかにも現代ならではの設定が魅力的で、ユーモラスな趣きも持っています。比較的ページ数の多い『人喰いの滝』はもうちょっと頑張って長編に膨らませて欲しかったと思うほど充実した作品。ラストの『蝶々がはばたく』には珍しく殺人事件が出てこず、火村と有栖川の休暇旅行を舞台にしているところが興味深いです。

タイトルになっている「ブラジル蝶の謎」も面白いのですが、
本書の別の短編が面白いです。

特に、「妄想日記」は、
精神障害者と、その医師との間の確執…悲しいことです。

他にも「彼女か彼か」なんかは、今までとは少し異なった
キャラが出てきて面白いです。

相変わらず、推理作家有栖川＆火村教授コンビ絶好調です。
