本作品は「偽札づくり」をテーマとしたミステリー。

軽快なテンポで進むクライムノベルである。作者の他の「取引」「震源」などの作品と同様、本作品も綿密な取材に基づいて作られており、本作品を読むと、自分も偽札を作れそうな気になってくるから不思議である。また、ボリュームたっぷりでありながら、一気によませるあたり、さすがである。

一方、あえて難をあげるとすれば、「エピローグ」である。さまざまな妨害に遭いながら「偽札づくり」を成し遂げようとする主人公達にどんどん感情移入し、上下巻で900ページ以上を読むことになるのだが、このたった５ページの「エピローグ」によって、作品による充足感が損なわれたと思うのは私だけだろうか？

面白いミステリーである。しかしこの「落語の落ち」のような「エピローグ」をあえてつけた意味が理解できない。

　第10回山本周五郎賞＆第50回日本推理作家協会賞Ｗ受賞作品。
　「宝島社　このミステリーがすごい！」　97年版　2位
　「週間文春　傑作ミステリーベスト10」　96年　4位

　友達がヤクザから多額の借金をし、その返済のために主人公は偽札作りを始める。主人公は「本物と寸分違わぬ紙幣を作ることができれば、偽札作りは犯罪を超越する」これを信念に、仲間と共に自分を陥れた者達に闘いを挑む。
　印刷に関しては専門用語も多々出てくるため、多少難しい感は否めないが、ユーモアたっぷりの文章なので、読んでいて苦は全くない。
　前に出てきた部分とつながり、「なるほどそういうことだったか」と感心するところ多数あり。
　ラストは全く予想だににしなかったものだったが、物凄く気持ち良いものであった。まさに、「超気持ちいい！」であった。
　
　上下巻合わせて約1000頁に及ぶ超長編だが、一気に読破できる。
　また、この本を読んだ誰しもが普段あまり意識せずに取り扱っている紙幣を手にとってじっくり眺めることになるだろう。

前半と違うのは、主人公達が少し大人になり、ちょっとだけハードボイルドっぽくなったこと。それでもユーモアのある場面が出てきて、すらすら読めます。ニセ札作りのことをあんなに細かく説明して大丈夫なんだろうか？
