自分が話すにふさわしくない相手と、何故か
話すこととなってしまった人間をそれぞれ主人公とする
3篇の連作短編集である。
その相手とは、父親の若い愛人/夫の元愛人/
死んだ父親の懇意にしていた店の女性/
と一筋縄ではいかない。

3人ともいわゆる「フツーの」生活を営んでいる人たちだが、
予期せぬ、異物とも言える他者の進入を受け、

築きあげてきた生活に少々の亀裂を感じる、という筋立て。
世間で言えば「ズレ」ている人たちに対し、
何らかの憧憬を抱きながらも、そこからその感情の発展性がなく、
だからそれがどうしたの？と読後言いたくなる。

唯一、第一篇「今日も未明に電話は鳴った」に登場する
ハマジュンというタレントの卵が魅力的。

ストーリー的に後半やや破綻しながらも、
ラスト、彼女の台詞だけで情景を立ち上がってくる様は
言いようもなく魅力である。

三篇所収。「今日も未明に電話は鳴った」は初期の名作「ハング・ルース」に近い時期の作品。「あなたがいちばん好きなもの」は「私はそれを我慢できない」という在日韓国人の目から見た韓国批判という重い作品の前に書かれたもの。いずれも軽い。韓国を行き来する狭間に書いた「書き流し」のようだ。父や夫の愛人がおもしろく描かれている連作のようなもの。ところがこの2編にオチをつけるような「夢を見ずにおやすみ」は重い。美術館を作ろうとして家業を倒産させた夢多き父が描かれているが、同時に許せないような身勝手な夫を受け入れられるようになる。それは夢見ることを捨てることによって自分が変わったからだ。夢見ることは楽しいが、現実を破綻させる原因でもある。
夢を見るな。そうするとグッスリ眠れるぞ。そういっている表題作である。
