賛否両論。その全てが存在した作品である。
どのようにも捉えられる謎。それに付随する無駄なトリック。
しかし得てしてそのトリックすらも何故か感動を呼ぶ仕掛け。

裏表紙にはこう書かれている。

「メルカトル鮎が最後に全てを解決する」

してねーよ。

　1993年に講談社ノベルズとして出たものの文庫化。
　著者の長編第二作。すごい厚さで、読んでいて手が疲れた。
　物語としてはそこそこ面白い。しかし、ミステリとしては納得がいかない。色々と説明不足なところが残っている。1000枚以上も書いておいて、この手抜き・隙間は何なんだと不思議に思うくらい。アンチ・ミステリ的な結末にもっていくにしても、もう少し構成をしっかりつくっておいてくれないと。
　うっかり次作の『痾』を先に読んでしまったのも痛かった。麻耶雄嵩の作品は、きちんと発表順に読むことをお勧めする。

メルカトル鮎シリーズというらしいが、その割りに彼は一向に出て来ず、その探偵は主役ではないのか？！と読んでいる間、探偵を求め続けたミステリ（苦笑）。

この麻耶雄嵩という人は独特な世界がある。
登場人物の心の様子が風景の説明からよく伝わるが、なんともイライラする表現だ。

登場人物の名前のつけ方が個性的といえば一言で済むが、これにも腹が立つ。
語り手である主人公は「如月烏有」（きさらぎうゆう）
しかも「烏有はそう思った」のような表現をする。
これがまた癇にさわる。
彼の助手である高校生は「舞奈桐璃」（まいなとうり）だ。
そして、最後まで謎である女優（らしい）は真宮和音（まみやかずね）。

始め腹が立ったものの、中盤はスピード感もあったのでスラスラ読めた。
