私はとてもクレバーな構造を持った小説だと思いました。まず、認識論についての長い議論という先制パンチがあって、その後その理論をベースに謎解きが進んで行きます。つまり筆者が始めに、こうやって謎解きしますよ、と読者に教え、それから実際に謎を解いてみせるわけです。手の内をまず最初に明かすことを厭わない、というより敢えてやっているところに京極氏の自信の深さが窺えます。でもそれに見合う濃い内容のミステリーでした。

600ページ以上あり、またエンジンがかかるまでの助走がやや長めですが、一旦動き出すと一気に読めてしまいます。ミステリー好きでない人にもお勧めの一冊です。

この作品は、推理小説と銘打っているがそれは「ズルイ」。謎解きの究明にいたっては「あまりにも非道い」。それでも、五つ星を付けざるを得ないほどに「圧倒的に上手い！」。

「アンフェアな謎解き」などと声を荒らげるほど私も純情ではないけれど、これを俗に言う本格推理小説と思って読んだ私は愕然とした。

これは「犯人当て」などという次元で済むお話ではないのだ。
世の中に妖怪という物が存在する事の謎解きと、理論。そこには妖怪マニアの浪漫主義などを軽く越えた、圧倒的なロジック（言い換えれば「科学」）がある。

とっつきにくい衒学的な装いさえも、全てはそのロジックを支えるための見事な手段だ。もちろん、主役である京極堂のヒロイックな魅力も楽しめるエンターテイメントである！傑作！！

その後の著者の作品に溢れる「京極世界」の要素は、ほぼ本作品で堪能できるだろう。

京極夏彦と言えば難しい漢字いっぱいの、すごく分厚い本。。。という印象があったので今まで避けていたのですが、
友達に面白いよと薦められ、ついに京極本に手を出しました。
しかし最初の先入観など何所へやら、驚く程読みやすく一気に読み進めてしまい、改めて本の面白さを実感した一冊です。
なので他の京極堂シリーズも読んでみたいと思います。
これまで京極夏彦の本を読んだことがない人、私のように苦手意識のあった人に是非読んでもらいたいです。
