『深川澪通り』シリーズ三冊目。
中篇二篇から成った前著『深川澪通り燈ともし頃』と違い
一作目『深川澪通り木戸番小屋』と同じ
連作短編集のスタイルに戻っている。

しかし一作目にはあった謎解きの要素は
本作ではもうほとんど見られなくなり、
解決さえされない、人情の絡むトラブルを
訳アリの木戸番夫婦が、時にただ見守ることで
癒される市井の人々を描いている。

文章に品位を保ち、饒舌すぎぬよう
語り口はシンプルながら平易では無い。
そして貧しいながらも、日本人が理想とする
近世の日本人の後ろ姿、心意気がここにある。
