　米国ミステリー作家協会のアンケートをもとに編集された１９７６年の本の翻訳です。アンケートによる部分と、特定の作家が自分の手法を説明している部分が交互に出てきます。ある意味では、古いです。
　この本の見方は、２つに分かれると思います。ひとつは、古典的なミステリーファンのためのもの。有名な作家が、それぞれどのような作法を採っていたかがわかり、米文学研究としておもしろいでしょう。
　もうひとつは、作家を志す人のため。実際の当時の作家ですら、あらかじめアウトラインを決めておくべきかどうか、という根本問題で、諸説が出てきます。このことによって、うまくバランスよく、アウトラインの必要性とその限界がわかるしくみになっています。
　クーンツの本と同様、本気で作家をめざす後輩たちのためにに、成功した先輩たちが忌憚なく自分の手の内を明かすものですので、内容的な好き嫌いは大きく分かれるでしょう。しかし、好き嫌いではなく、まず読んで、諸説を参考に、自分の考えをよくまとめ直してみましょう。

　この本は、アメリカ探偵クラブに在籍するプロ、アマ含む数百人の会員から集めたアンケートを基に構成されている。集められたアンケートの中から、各章での主題に対して、的確とされる回答が選出されているので、無駄読みの感がない。
　たとえば「なぜ書くのか」という章では、選りすぐりの１９人の小説家達のそれぞれの回答を読むことができる。

　こちらが知りたいひとつの質問に対して、複数の回答の中から自分に適した回答を、参考にすることができるのである。書き手ひとりの意見に左右されることが、この本にはない。
　またミステリーを書き始めるにあたって、読んでおいた方が良いとされる本と、購入したほうが良いとされる字典等の紹介も参考になる。

　本書はアメリカ探偵作家クラブ（ＭＷＡ）のメンバー数百人の会員全員に６項目のアンケートを送付して代表的な回答を選んだ６つの章を骨格としている。その章は、「なぜ書くのか」「アイデアの見つけ方」「いつ、どんなふうにして書くか」「ステレオタイプを避けよ」「つまずきの処理法」「ミステリーの秘訣」であり、多くの作家の回答がぎっしりつまっている。

　特に「ステレオタイプを避けよ」の章は面白かった。例えばリチャード・マーチン・スターンは次のように述べている。「鉄拳をふるい、種馬のようで、酒が強く、狙撃がうまく、何でも知っていて、どんなことでもやる主人公。もうたくさんだと言いたい。」

　その他、23項目を選んで個々のミステリー作家に執筆を依頼している。例えば、ジョン・Ｄ・マクドナルドは「人物に厚みを持たせる方法」を、フィリス・Ａ・ホイットニーは「ゴシック小説とは何か？」を書いている。

　技術的な面もいろいろ面白いが、ミステリー作家の仕事好きも良く分かる。精力的に書き、さらに徹底的に何回も書きなおしている人ばかりだ。それもこれも、ミステリー作家が口で説明できないほど自分の仕事にほれ込んでいるからだろう。
