石川英輔さんの、この「大江戸」シリーズ（？）はどれもこれも大変面白いです。当時の様子を描いた挿絵などもたくさんで、見ているだけでも面白いです。江戸の庶民の生活に興味のある方は、一度読んでみては？

そんな時代だからこそ、過去の調和した生活を見直したい。決して貧しくない、
むしろ見方を変えれば現代の生活より遥かに豊かな生活をかいま見れます
そんな身近な話題が楽しく分かりやすく理解できます

今、環境問題が深刻化しています。
エネルギーを始めとする天然資源は過剰消費され、廃棄物処理場は不足し、温暖化ガスは増加する一方です。
国を挙げた省エネ、リサイクル、バイオマスの活用が求められており、北欧やドイツにおける成功例が多く紹介されています。
しかし、これらの取組は、人口、気象条件、社会条件が異なる我が国では、必ずしも成功するとは限りません。

江戸時代、我々の御先祖様は、植物、つまり短期間に国土に降り注ぐ太陽エネルギーだけを徹底的に活用した循環型社会を築いていました。
決して豊かな生活ではありません。明かりは字も読めないほど暗く、移動手段はすべて徒歩、あらゆる日用品は何度も使い回されていました。
しかし、江戸の人口は西欧諸国のどの首都よりも多く、屎尿処理などの廃棄物問題にも、エネルギー問題にも無縁でした。
現代に比べれば不便。でも決して劣ってはいない。我が国の財産を徹底的に生かし切って、300年近くも持続した社会があったのです。

「伝統と文化」がなぜ大切なのか。本書を読めば自ずから理解できます。我々の未来のために、先人の知恵に学びましょう。
