　主人公の佐和子は、脇役なのではないだろう？本書の主人公はあくま
でも、佐和子の祖父であるように思う。
祖父の日記を通して物語が動き始め、引き込まれていく…。宮本輝さん
らしい作風。
次は？次は？とついつい読み進んでしまう。この巻では、日記の間の
佐和子の心情、行動がかえって現実に引き戻されてさめてしまう感じが
ある。だからあえて彼女自身のことは控えめに書かれている。その辺の
うまさは感じます。

初めて宮本輝さんの小説を読んだが、「祖父の日記の謎」というミステリ色を帯びた面白い小説だった。

常にミステリを読んでいる身には最終的な「解決編」がないのが残念だが、そこがこの小説の長所であり、読者への問題提起になっており、小説としての深みをかもし出しているようだ。

「石のような女だ」と夫に言われ、社長令嬢の佐和子の結婚生活は１年で破綻した。なにする気も起こらないまま、亡き祖父が佐和子に遺贈した日記を思い出し、読み始める。その日記には、若き日の祖父が第一次大戦直後１９２０年代のパリで滞在した８ヶ月での、誰も知らない事柄が記されていた。日本に残した想い人、パリでの恋、結婚、そして･･･。死んだと伝えられた祖父の娘が、まだ生きているかもしれない・・・そういう疑念をもった佐和子は手紙の翻訳を手伝ってくれた青年滝井とともにパリに渡る・・・。日記に書かれた“オレンジの壷”とは何か？

佐和子を描く現代のパートと、日記というスタイルをとって１９２２年の祖父の様子を描いたパートとからなる。第一次大戦後の荒んだ欧州、人種差別、社会主義運動、ファシズムの影・・、契約を取るために奮闘する祖父。１９２０年代のパートはエキゾティックな舞台に生き生きとした日本人が描かれ、さながら戦中の欧州を舞台にした佐々木譲や藤田宣永の作品かのよう。一方の、現代のパートは、離婚で憔悴しているとはいえ、一般人とは異なる生活を送る優雅な富裕層に属するヒロインの人物造形に違和感を覚えた（まさに宮本輝らしい設定ではあるが)。
