探偵の木更津悠也は、大富豪である今鏡伊都から依頼を受け、
友人の香月実朝とともに、今鏡家の豪邸・蒼鴉城に赴くことになる。

しかし、蒼鴉城に到着した彼らを持っていたのは、密室状態の部屋で
伊都の首と、息子である有馬の胴体が発見された、という報せだった……。



何はともあれ、前述の密室殺人に関する木更津の推理が、本作の白眉。

生真面目な読者の神経を逆撫でするような、バカミス的解法が示されます。
（何十億分の一の奇跡ｗ）


また、本作では、ある《見立て》に基づいた連続殺人が起きるのですが、ミステリ
へのオマージュゆえとはいえ、安易といえば安易な趣向が用いられています。

甲冑の具足を履かされた死体、死体の上のオレンジの種、白粉で化粧された生首……
これらを繋げるミッシング・リンクを知って、「マニアの悪ふざけ」と酷評する人が居ても
仕方がないとは思います。


ただ、個人的には、意表を衝く探偵役の交代劇や意想外な伝奇小説的背景など、
ミステリのコードやガジェットを裏切るメッセージを内包させつつも、結末では臨界
ぎりぎりでミステリの枠内に納めてみせた、弱冠二十一歳（当時）の作家の手腕
に感服させられました。

　91年（単行本）→93年（講談社ノベルス）→96年（文庫）。
　著者の第一長編にして、メルカトル鮎の最後の事件。著者の作品の中では、いちばん「ミステリ」っぽいのではなかろうか。きちんとトリックもあり、どんでん返しも効いている。名探偵が不条理な世界に巻き込まれたりもしない。
　そういう意味で、普通に楽しめてしまった。まあ、新人らしい欠点は（いくつも）あるが、将来性を感じさせてくる良作だったのではないか。
　しかし、著者は現実には、メタミス的な傾向を強めていくことになる。どのあたりに分岐点があったのか、知りたいものだ。

この本で小気味よいのは、「探偵の推理は絶対である」という暗黙の了解を裏切ってくれる点である。小栗虫太郎ばりの、暗鬱感ただよう館の雰囲気もまあまあだ。最後には恐らく誰も予想出来ないであろうすさまじい（笑）どんでん返しが用意されているが、どうも現実ばなれしており「反則だろそりゃ」の感を否めない。個々の人物も極めて影が薄く、「人間が描けていない」などと通りいっぺんの文句は言いたくないが、やはり読み応え、インパクトを弱めてしまっている要因として目についてしまう。巷では結構評判がいいようだが、何のことはない、凡作である。
