主人公周辺の設定、舞台背景がいかにもハードボイルドといったかんじで本格ミステリが好きな人が読んだら、ちょっとこれは違うかな、といった感じでしょう。しかしながらスピード感とテンポはなかなかよく倒錯した世界のはなしながら以外と簡単に読めます。

９３年度江戸川乱歩賞受賞作。探偵村野ミロシリーズの第一作である。

『グロテスク』や『柔らかな頬』から先に読んだ読者のかたは、本書を物足りなく感じるかもしれない。正直、自分も再読してみて、展開に無理がある箇所が認められるし、ミロの行動原理に共感できないなあ、と改めて思ってしまった。単純なところでは、なんでこの男と寝ようとするの？とか。でも物足りなく感じて当然なのだ。著者は、一作ごとに著しい変化を遂げる作家なのだから。

ストーリーにはあまりひきつけられなかったが、それでも最後まで読ませる筆力がある。そしてところどころ妙に印象に残る箇所も。たとえば、ミロが他人、特に女性を観察する視線に後の作品の萌芽を見ることができると思う。ストーリーよりも細部に魅力を感じる。その細部を極め、執拗なまでに書き込んでいるのが『グロテスク』だったりするのだとも思った。

やはり著者の作品は、発表順に読んだ方がいいかもしれない。
