1933年、京城（現ソウル）に生まれる。ノンフィクション作家。1955年、早稲田大学政経学部新聞学科を卒業。読売新聞社に入社。社会部勤務、ニューヨーク特派員などを経て1971年退社。『誘拐』で講談社出版文化賞（ノンフィクション部門）受賞。『不当逮捕』で講談社ノンフィクション賞受賞。著書に『現代家族論』『ニューヨークの日本人』『私戦』『警察回り』『不当逮捕』『誘拐』『疵』『戦後──美空ひばりとその時代』『私たちのオモニ』などがある。
