大富豪の屋敷に届けられる殺人予告。差出人は蝿男。厳戒態勢の中、お約束通り当主は密室状態の部屋の中で殺されてしまう。
いったい蝿男は、どうやって予告通りに殺人を犯したのか？
迎え撃つ名探偵帆村荘六は、この謎を解くことができるのか？
昔懐かしい探偵ミステリの王道をいくような、うれしくなってしまう設定ではじまる本書は、昭和初期のおおらかともいえる筋運びと作者が得意とした科学知識をちりばめて書かれたミステリなのである。
いまの時代のミステリに慣れた人にとっては、本書の真相は逆に新鮮かもしれない。いったい、どう解決するんだとこっちが心配になるほど本書の事件の謎は奇妙なものなのだ。はっきりいって本書はバカミスの元祖みたいな出来なのである。誰もこんな大胆な解答がかえってくるとは思わないんじゃないだろうか。詳細なこだわりなく、ただ単純に物語が進んでゆくのが気負いがなくてよい。こういう自由な発想が、現代には不足しているのかもしれない。これは大切なことだ。縛りにとらわれて、活字本来の魔力が半減してしまってるのかもしれない。もっと自由に想像力をはたらかせられるようになりたいものだ。
とにもかくにも、先人の偉大なる業績に舌を巻いてしまった。この自由さを見習いたい。

現代を基準に考えれば、おそろしく型破りな作品。
読者の志向によって評価がわかれる作品である。
その理由として、
1舞台が関西地方なのであるが、会話文などがコチコチの関西弁で書かれていることが多い。
それを読みにくいととるか、自然なやりとりととるか。
2あまりにも非科学的な犯行。

既成概念を逸脱しているのが、現代人の感覚に会うのかどうか。

とにかく、犯行がわかった時の衝撃は大きい。

人によっては、腹を立てて本を投げ捨てるかもしれませんが、この手のホラ話が好きな人にはたまらないお話です。
かなりご都合主義的な展開が目立ちますが、そこは次から次へと読者サービスを盛り込むための
筆者の努力と思って読みましょう。
まじめな話を読みたい人は避けたほうが良いですが、愉快なホラ話の面白アイデアをばかばかしいと思いつつ、楽しめる人にはお勧めです。
