その時代時代に優れた現代語訳はいくつもありましたが、たった数十年前の日本語でさへ現代人には読みづらいのが現実です。初心者が手にするにあたり瀬戸内さんの源氏物語の右にでるものはありません。

恋人達の心の動きを知るうえで欠かすことのできない和歌のやりとりは物語中を通じ数えられないほどでてきます。瀬戸内さんの源氏物語の一番の魅力はこの膨大な数の和歌にもすべて現代語訳をつけてあることです。古典の知識を持ち合わせなくとも平安時代の壮大ロマン小説を楽しむことができるなんて素晴らしいと思います。

みなさんがおっしゃっているように原文に忠実（ほぼ直訳）なので、
自分で文章と文章の間にあるものを読み取りたいと思っている方に
おすすめです。

著者によって脚色、装飾された源氏物語ではありません。

あまり期待しないでこの本を手にした。読み進んでいくうちに止められなくなって一気に読んでしまった。今までいろいろな人の訳に挑戦したが、最後まで根気が続かず、なかなか読めなかった。この本の巻末にその章のだいたいの内容がのせてあるので、それを読んでから、本章を読みはじめるとわかりやすい。今まで人間関係がいまいちよくわかっていなかったが、この本を読んで、頭の中がすっきり整理できた。当時の習慣もよく理解できて、わかりやすく良かった。次は、原文に挑戦したい。
