儒仏道教の思想が相互に交じり合う「シンクレティズム」の空間としての東アジアを解説する本。肉体や血統性を重視し礼節を重んじる儒教、個人の苦しみと生々流転とそこからの完全なる離脱を目指す仏教、そしてまじないや呪術により俗世の思い通りにならなさを超えた次元をひらいていく道教と、それぞれ相反する独自の世界観を持つ三つの思想形態が、同じ空間のなかで互いに影響を与え合うことで、そこにある自然や人間や死者の魂をどのように意味づけるに至ったのかが問われる。
「シンクレティズム」という発想は、個々に明確に差別化された特定の「宗教」を論者が理念的な前提とし、そこからお互いの「融合」や「混同」を指摘していくような考え方であって、それら個別の「宗教」が当事者の利害や世俗権力の統治や研究者の便宜のために恣意的に差別化されてきたという歴史のリアルを見落としてしまいがちな悪弊がある。本書もそうした欠点を免れているとはいい難いが、ともかくも「儒教」「仏教」「道教」という三種の「宗教」の性格と、それが東アジアにおいていかに変容を遂げてきたのか、という経緯を振り返るのにはたいへん有益な書物であるといってよい。

シンクレィズム（融合、混成、ごたまぜ）されて東アジアの思想が（儒教、仏教、道教）が今日に至ったと面白く読み始めたが、読み進むうちに本の構成がシンクレィズムしてきた感じがしてきた。
断片的には、面白い話なども盛り込まれているのだが・・・。

筆者の語り口は軽妙だが、内容は深い。

読み手の固定観念を解きほぐし、転換しながら、宗教・思想の本質に触れていく。
知的スポーツのように爽やかだ。

ナイキのマークの由来まで出てくる筆者の古今東西の知識の広さ、引用のうまさは、
「世の中のいろいろなことをもっと知りたい」という気持にさせてくれる。

難しいことが書いてあるのかと思いきや、
温かい人柄の筆者の部屋で、いろいろな写真を見せてもらいながら
「へぇ〜っ、そうなんだ〜」と面白い話を聞いているような本だ。

儒教・仏教・道教については全く素人で、興味すら無かった私でも読了し「面白かった！」と満足。
勧めてくれた人に感謝した。
年齢を重ねる毎に読み取れるものが違ってきそうなので、再読用として取っておきたい。
