あの大学の名物先生が喋り尽くす英文学講義。英文学者といえばかび臭い本のページをめくりながら黙々と書物に当たっているというイメージを打破する高山宏の傑作講義。内容も決して軽い物ではなく、かなりの本格派なので、知ってる人しか分からない、というネタから知らない人でもオーケーなネタまで幅広いがいわゆる一般読者に向けられた本で値段も安い。１６００円で６０００円分の知識を手に入れたい人向きです。この人の本で教えられる事は大変多いので、衿を正して大笑いしながら読みましょう。

英文学者を志す者として、この『奇想天外・英文学講義』に出会えたことに非常な満足感を覚えている。’奇想天外’というふざけたタイトルに、「ヒースクリフは殺人者か？」（星1つ）的な揚げ足取りの内容かと思いきや、純英文学を大きく超えた内容に歓喜した。視覚というモチーフが底流を流れ、表面を漂うのはシェイクスピア、ロビンソン・クルーソー、ホームズ、不思議の国のアリスといった馴染みの深いキャラクター達だ。これらを通して'超'英文学者・高山宏は、17-20世紀にわたる知的冒険を繰り広げる。キーワードは光のパラダイム。但しこの本は英文学への入門ではなく、英文学者とその卵たちへの挑戦状である。

博覧強記の学魔、鬼才、奇才、異才、ケレン、ばさら・・・。さまざまに形容される異能の「英文学者」、アカデミック・シャーマン・高山宏。本書は彼の提唱する「＜超＞英文学」のマニフェストである。内容は決して難解ではない。ただその意外性に驚かされるばかりである。教科書サイズでありながら、既存の「英文学」の教科書には決して描かれない、異貌の「英文学史」。
