「迷信」の別名のような印象の「伝承農法」と『科学』の取り合わせがミスマッチです。
そこに興味をひかれて読みました。土や栄養、アレロパシーといった基礎科学が丁寧に関連の章で解説されています。連作を続けると病害が減少する「発病衰退現象」や、混植するとよい影響を与え合うコンパニオン・プランツなど、植物栽培の広い世界を少しのぞけたような気がします。
　家庭菜園は小さいですが、すみずみまで管理できる良さがあります。

経験的に行われてきた
伝承農法の知恵に科学的な
解説を加えて、家庭菜園の方法を
説明しています。

害虫対策や土壌の栄養改善など、
なるほどの知恵が書かれています。

2.0 out of 5 stars 読んでいて土いじりをしたくなる本ではなかった, 2009/7/9
違う作物をある組み合わせで同じ畝に植える混植が、
病気や害虫を防ぐ事が農家の間で経験的に知られているらしい。
こう言った伝承農法の科学的解明を期待すると、あてが外れる。

もちろんそのような分かりやすい説明も一部にはあるが、
どちらかと言うを教科書的に項目を並べて説明している感じで、
難易度云々ではなく読んでいてブルーバックス的な楽しさが無かった。

第一章では、家庭菜園でつい作りすぎてしまう事を指して、
『本来、家庭で消費される野菜を補完するものであり、
販売を目的とするものではありません。』と締めくくられている。
楽しさの余り処分に困るほど作る人のことを言っているのであるが、
何も大真面目にそんなことを書かなくても、と違和感を感じた。

第二章では、自然農法・有機農法・伝承農法と記述する中で、
自然農法の冒頭に岡田茂吉(ＭＯＡ教祖)の名を挙げている。
著者は、略歴にある通りＭＯＡの自然農法大学校校長を経て、
ＭＯＡ系のＮＰＯ法人の理事になっている人間である。

『自然農法』とは、岡田茂吉・福岡正信・川口由一など、
農法を唱えた始祖がはっきりしている農法を主に指すようだが、
本を買う人の多くは『伝承農法』に興味を持っているはずである。
