まずこの本の中で目から鱗なのが十和一等の計算法。本書では２つの
方法を教えています。恐ろしく早く計算できます。
次に和差積、つまりAの２乗−Bの２乗の公式ですが、これを少し
応用するとたちまち早く計算できる。
その他日付から曜日を当てる、数独風パズル、外貨計算など
実用的なものから数理パズルまで解説していて、あ沿いの要素も
加えています。
私はこのシリーズの最初の本は読んでいませんが、いきなりpart2から
読まれてもすんなり入っていけます。

最近はインド式計算法が大ブームだ。ちょっと見てみると、計算は出来るが考え方が突飛で、良く分からない方法に映る。算数や数学との連続性も無いみたいだ。要するに日本の数学や算数の考え方と結び付けるのは難しい。その点、この本の著者は京都大学理学部卒で、工学修士。現在は理系進学塾を運営している。このパート2は生活に使える計算法が中心。思いがけない時にサクッと使えて重宝しているし、計算の考え方も楽に理解できる。前著『計算力を強くする』について書くと、19×19の表を暗記しなくてはいけないが、それさえ覚えれば八割方身につけたのと同じ。単語帳などを利用して覚えれば良い。後は意外なほど楽に進む。日本式の方がインド式より自然な計算法だと思う。

『計算力を強くする - 状況判断力と決断力を磨くために』の続編。
続編は概して二番煎じだったり、単なるアウトテイクの寄せ集めだったりするのですが、
本書は十和一等、十等一和、スライド方式などなど前作で触れられなかった新しい発想が豊富で、
もしかすると前著を凌いでいるかもしれません。
ただ、数独の解説は蛇足という気がしますが。
