著書において、伝統的科学観として
１）科学における認知構造
２）科学的主張の検証可能性
３）科学者による審査（ピア・レビュー）課程
の３つが挙げられている。

本著書においては、ガリレオガリレイ、ニュートン、メンデル、そして我が国の野口英世といった、誰もが知る科学者の研究不成行為の可能性についてまで言及している。
例えば、ニュートン、メンデルについては、自分の仮説に合うような綺麗なデータを捏造をしたのではないのか？という疑惑を解説しており、「科学における認知構造」について切り込んでいる。
野口英世については、彼の指導者であるロックフェラー研究所のエリートであるサイモン・フレクスナーの弟子として、また、最も権威ある研究所の花形であるとして、欠陥を見つけ出す審査（ピア・レビュー）課程から逃れたのであると結論づけている。（実際、野口英世の研究のほとんどは現在その価値を失っており捏造が疑われているのであるが、近年、彼の肖像が千円札に用いられたり、野口英世アフリカ賞なるものが創設されるなど、日本国の科学リテラシーの無さを象徴するようなことが起こっており、ぜひ官僚や政治家の方には本書を読んで頂きたい。）

本著書の出版は１９８３年であり、大変昔のことであるが、現在も我が日本において、アニリール・セルカン事件という、「業績として上げている論文がそもそも存在しない」、「著者名が書き換えられている」など、科学的主張の検証可能性や、科学者による審査（ピア・レビュー）課程を巧みに逃れる不正行為が起こっている。建築学分野では新規性・オリジナリティのない研究でも学位が取れるという特殊性や、査読付論文無でも学位が取れるという東京大学のシステムにも問題が投げかけれられている。

Betrayers of the Truth, 1982 の翻訳が化学同人から1988年に出版されて、20年近く。最近の事件も解説してある。
ここに書かれている科学者たちのデータや論文のねつ造と改ざんは減る気配はない。そのためもあって再度出版されたようだが、多くは前の内容と変わらない。私はねつ造と改ざんの手口を知りたくて今回の本も含めすべて読んだが、手口は今でも通用する。と言うことは手口は進歩していないのである。なぜ行われるかは書かれていることに賛成であるが、今はさらに競争が厳しくなり、多くなりはすれ、減ることはなさそうだ。科学者が自分たちでチェックする機構そのものもすでに限界であろう。
科学者も人の子、誘惑はある。しかし誘惑に負ければ、キャリアは一生閉ざされることを常に肝に銘じておく必要があろう。

科学とは誤謬と歪曲と欺瞞から免れ得ない人間的行為であり、ひとつのイデオロギーである…。
アメリカの花形ジャーナリストである著者が、トーマス・クーンの科学革命論を下敷きにして、豊富な事例をもとに科学史の再編を試みています。
論理実証主義や進歩史観という「神話」が今なおはびこる科学界に一石を投じる本だと思います。
ところで、ベストセラーになった福岡伸一の『生物と無生物のあいだ』を読むと、彼の科学観が本書の影響を受けていることが分かります。
２０数年も前に書かれた本ですが、今でも一読の価値はあると思います。
