　私自身、化学が好きでイオン反応などは好きでしたが、モルが出てきてちんぷんかんぷんになりました。そんな挫折する中、本書はモルとは何か？を分かり易く説明してくれています。モルさえ覚えてしまえば化学が好きになります。しかも化学特有のベンゼン環などや出てきません。数式も最低限度しか出てきません。この本をもっと早く読んでいれば化学が嫌いにならなくて済んだのに。まあ、遅くは無いですからこれを読んで再び化学の世界に関心が持てる書物です。

化学を基礎から解説します、と謳った新書や入門書はとても多いが、この本は別格でした。通常の入門書は、あくまでも化学に詳しい人が教科書の言葉を言い換えて説明しているだけに過ぎないような印象を受けていました。

でもこの本だとまったくの好奇心レベルの発想から丁寧に教えてくれます。
化学を学んだことのある人なら気にはならないだろうことでも、素人にとっては考え方がついていけず、結局分からないままor丸暗記となって面白くなくなってしまう…。
そんな不満を解消してくれた本です。

繰り返しになりますが、説明のスタンスが従来の本とは異なっている点がとても分かりやすい理解につながってくれます。

　1980年初版の同名の本（2006年までに44刷のベストセラー）の新装版。「内容は変えずに新たに活字を組みなおしたもの」とのこと。
　
　共有結合・イオン結合・金属結合、電子と周期律表、物質の反応、モルなど高校の化学でぜひ理解しておかなければならない基本的な概念を扱っている。
化学に詳しい兄が妹に化学を教えるという形で、対話形式で化学を解説しており、たとえ話も多い。読みやすく化学の基本を理解できる好著。ベストセラーとして30年近く出版されてきただけのことはあると思う。
　
　化学を学ぶ高校生や、私のように文系で化学から何十年も遠ざかっていた人にとって、基本をおさえられるとても良い本だと思います。
