この本の内容については、まあ他のレビュアの方々のおっしゃる通りなんだけど、「根拠薄弱」だとか「データ不足」だとかの批判がくるであろうことは、そこらへんは著者だってプロの科学者なんだから、折り込み済みなんだと思う。

そこでなんだが、有名大学の著者な学者(特に理科系の)に、チョー個人的な、世間話的な思いのタケや怒りを(その著者の専門分野のトピックで少し味付けして)ぶちまけさせて、新書のエッセイ本にして売り出すという、新手の市場が出現しているのではないか。「バカ」や「品格」の大成功という新書業界のこの勢いに乗って(乗ろうとして)、あろうことかブルーバックスまでもがこの市場に参入(乱入?)してきたのだ。しかも、マンガ入りのぶっとい腰巻きという、どこかで見たような体裁で。

ま、この本に関しては、その手法は成功してるとは言い難いけどね。

それにしても、昔のノーベル賞教授が書いた格調高いエッセイや、森毅センセのようなユーモアあふれる文体に比べて、まったく、最近の若い京大教授の書く文章ときたら、まるでなっとらん!このままでは日本は……

まず根拠となる資料の提示が不十分です。
「電車内でケータイを操作している人は、本を読んでいる人よりも多い」という記述がありましたが、このような事実は客観的に確認できませんでした。確かに、日本人のメール利用頻度が多いというのは事実かも知れません。しかし、この現象を「サル＝主体性がない」と表現するのは短絡的かと思います。

文中では、日本人特有の文化や気質にも触れています。しかしデータからの考察が幼稚なため、全く説得力がありません。統計資料も都合の良いように解釈されており、読み手に誤解を与える可能性があります。 若者言葉やケータイの何が気に入らないのかは不明ですが、とにかく著者の主観に満ちた愚痴と説教ばかりの内容で、断じて科学的ではありません。

読み物として否定はしませんが、
ブルーバックスシリーズとして相応しくない著書だと思います。
非常に残念です。

端的に言えば、著者の自己満足と少量のデータだけで構成された本です。
それゆえに、中には「顔文字はケータイが生んだ日本独自の文化である」と言った調査を怠ったであろう記述すら見受けられます。
書籍として、読む価値は低いと言えるでしょう。
